Celebrating Women in Sports from Carmarthenshire

We’re thrilled to introduce the Smashing Boundaries Project—an exciting new Sporting Heritage project dedicated to shining a spotlight on the incredible achievements of women in sports from Carmarthenshire, past and present. Our mission is to honour and celebrate these women, whose stories have often been overlooked, and to inspire a new generation of young girls and women to pursue their passions in sport.

Smashing Boundaries seeks to uncover hidden histories, highlight the contributions of women in sports, and reshape Carmarthenshire’s rich sporting heritage with a more balanced and inclusive narrative.

We’re calling on you—local sportswomen, sports clubs, community groups, and individuals. Whether you are a past or present female athlete, coach, or passionate about women’s sports, we want to hear your story!

- Were you part of a team that broke new ground?

- Do you have memories of sportswomen pushing boundaries in motor racing, snooker, cricket, darts, or other sports?

- Have you overcome challenges to succeed in a sport traditionally dominated by men?

If you or someone you know has a story to tell, we would love to connect. Join us in unearthing and celebrating the unsung heroes of Carmarthenshire’s sporting history.

- Community Engagement: We’ll be hosting a series of dynamic engagement events and temporary displays throughout the community—connecting sports clubs, colleges, and local groups to highlight opportunities in women’s sports and showcase inspiring stories from local sportswomen.

- Young People Leading the Way: With the support of colleges and film studios, we’re empowering a group of young people to document these amazing stories on film. They’ll interview both past and present sportswomen, gaining skills in interviewing, filming, and storytelling along the way.

- Celebratory Exhibition: The project will culminate in an exciting temporary exhibition at Parc Howard Museum. This unique display, shaped by the stories and films we uncover, will feature biographies of noteworthy sportswomen, memorabilia, photos, personal artifacts, and oral history recordings. Together, we’ll bring to life the remarkable achievements of Carmarthenshire’s female athletes.

For too long, the world of sports was dominated by male achievements. But women from our community have made extraordinary contributions to sports—breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes in fields like motor racing, snooker, cricket, and darts. Smashing Boundaries aims to change that narrative, providing recognition where it’s long overdue and creating an inspiring legacy for future generations.
