Sophie's Story
My name is Sophie and I chose to do my work experience at Carmarthenshire Museum because of my interest in history, especially the more ancient parts of it.
During the week we’ve been given an insight into the many different jobs available in a museum; at the start of the week we were handling collections and researching more about them, we learnt about all the things that museums are required to do to keep artefacts in a good condition, and we experienced how the visitor service team works to ensure that the museum is kept safe and clean.
One thing I enjoyed whilst doing my work experience was seeing how closely they work with the community, an example of this is the memory boxes they are developing from different decades to show to people with dementia or Alzheimer’s to help them talk about the past and their own memories.
Work experience at the museum is definitely worth doing as you have the opportunity to do tasks related to the many different careers available in a museum, instead of spending the week doing one thing.
