Ernest Harold Jones and the Jones Dynasty
Over fifty years ago Sally Moss fell in love with the beautiful redbrick building in Church Lane – Carmarthen School of Art. Purpose built it opened its doors in 1892 after the public raised most of the funding. Researching its history for the 2024 Edition of the Carmarthenshire Antiquary, it is clear that the role of William Jones and his family was pivotal in its success – and would have a profound and lasting legacy on art and education in Carmarthenshire and beyond. The ‘Jones dynasty’ included Ernest Harold Jones who was a pupil under his father William (Headmaster for nearly 40 years) – and with his mother and two sisters also went on to teach art there.
Sally Moss is a Curator, lecturer, exhibition organiser, interpreter and mentor. A background in Fine Art, Film Animation and Education led to work in galleries and museums - including as the first Exhibitions Officer/ Acting Curator at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery & Museum, Swansea; a decade at Carmarthen Museum and then for more than twenty years in several senior curatorial posts at Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales. Commissioned to breathe new life into projects and places – including the Graham Sutherland Gallery; the major redevelopment of the National Wool Museum at Drefach Felindre, Carmarthenshire - which was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award - and Commissioning Curator for Oriel y Parc, Pembrokeshire landscape Gallery. A renowned authority on the British artist Graham Sutherland. Lecture topics include Art & Industry, Welsh Textiles, Carmarthen School of Art and contemporary artists. Currently a trustee of the Oriel Myrddin Trust and was a founding trustee and Secretary of the Tywi Gate Way Trust. Past honorary positions include membership of the UK Museums & Galleries Commission; the Art Committee of Arts Council Wales and Chair of the Exhibitions Panel. Married to the sculptor Roger Moss – working and living in Carmarthen since 1972.
During a decade as Assistant Curator at Carmarthenshire Museum, Sally Moss was involved in the exhibition “A Son to Luxor’s Sand” which celebrated the work of Harold Jones - with loans from The British Museum (including an Egyptian mummy!) as well as the collection at Carmarthen Museum. Her talk will touch on this and also his love for, and influence on, Welsh Art and culture – including a long association with Carmarthenshire Antiquarian Society. Plus, some glimpses of his life in context!
