Guest Curated by Professor Joann Fletcher, Exploring Ancient Egypt: The Story of Harold Jones exhibition invites visitors to step into the fascinating world of one of Carmarthen’s most remarkable figures.

Ernest Harold Jones (1877–1911) was both a talented artist and pioneering archaeologist whose short but extraordinary career took him from Carmarthenshire to the heart of Egypt’s greatest discoveries. Beginning his journey as an art student at the Royal College of Art, Harold went on to work on excavations across Egypt, living in ancient tombs and documenting their treasures through his exceptional paintings and drawings. His skills and perseverance brought him into contact with some of the most important archaeologists of his time, including Howard Carter, and he was among the first to identify clues that would later lead to the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb.

The exhibition showcases Harold’s vibrant artwork alongside artefacts he helped uncover, offering an insight into both the splendour of ancient Egypt and the story of a Welshman who left a lasting mark on the field of Egyptology. With paintings, objects, and personal stories, visitors can follow Harold’s life from his beginnings in Carmarthen to his influential role in the Valley of the Kings, where his work helped pave the way for one of archaeology’s most iconic discoveries.
