Pendine at War

Join local historian and retired Museum Curator, Chris Delaney, for a fascinating talk uncovering the remarkable wartime history of Pendine, Llanmiloe, Pembrey and the surrounding area.

Far from being just a quiet stretch of coast, Pendine played a vital role in Britain’s wartime defence and preparation for D-Day. Following the evacuation from Dunkirk, fears of invasion prompted the relocation of key military units from Kent to the Carmarthenshire coastline. Within weeks, Pendine’s beaches, farms, hotels and bungalows were requisitioned, Llanmiloe House became a hub of activity, and even an airfield was established on the sands.

Discover how secret resistance bunkers were built in places like Laugharne, how the Polish 316 Squadron operated from Pembrey, and why a section of Rommel’s Atlantic Wall was constructed at Morfa Bychan. Learn about large-scale training operations involving both British and American forces, from troop landings to complex logistics, and how this transformed local communities.

Packed with vivid local stories, this talk shines a light on a dramatic chapter in our area’s history and the extraordinary people who lived through it.
