Description

Join us for a fascinating talk with Dr Nicole Cochrane, Assistant Curator, Tate Britain that looks more deeply at how Wales inspired and shaped JMW Turner's artistic career.

JMW Turner first visited Wales in the 1790s, aged only 17. His first truly independent travel with the purpose of looking for artistic inspiration, he would go on to tour the country, often off the beaten track, six times over the next two decades. The scenery he encountered over a series of tours would inspire the young artist at a pivotal point in his career, ready to be noticed as a rising star in landscape painting. This talk will explore Turner’s visits to Wales, his methods and practise in sketching and painting, and why his experiences of the Welsh landscape were so impactful to his career.
